Obesity-Related Heart Disease Deaths Tripled Over Last 20 Years
There has been a three-fold increase in obesity-related deaths from cardiovascular disease over approximately the last two decades– from 1999 to 2020– according to some new research. Obesity is currently estimated to affect 42% of the U.S. population, a 10% increase from the previous decade.
“The number of people with obesity is rising in every country across the world,” said Zahra Raisi-Estabragh, M.D., lead study author. “Our study is the first to demonstrate that this increasing burden of obesity is translating into rising heart disease deaths.”
The study included data from 1999-2020 on 281,135 deaths where obesity was considered to be a contributing factor. Researchers found that Black adults, especially Black women, had the highest rates of obesity-related heart disease deaths. In other racial groups, men had more obesity-related heart disease deaths than women.
The study authors believe these findings “underscore the need to address obesity more effectively in individuals and communities,” which involves both personal lifestyle changes and confronting problems like health inequalities and socio-economic deprivation.
Saturated Fats May Impair Memory, Omega 3s Could Help
Saturated fats from foods like meat, shortening, and dairy may promote inflammation in brain cells and impair neurons involved in the creation of new memories, a recent study has found. However, the omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA could help protect the brain from these harmful effects.
In the study, researchers examined the effects of palmitic acid– the most abundant saturated fatty acid in many high-fat foods– on two types of brain cells. It increased inflammation in both cell types, but cells that were pre-treated with DHA were more protected against the increase in inflammation.
“Previous work has shown that DHA is protective in the brain and that palmitic acid has been detrimental to brain cells,” said Michael Butler, first study author, “but this is the first time we’ve looked at how DHA can directly protect against the effects of palmitic acid in those microglia.”
The findings in this study are still very preliminary but align with similar results from animal research. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) can be consumed through fatty fish, like salmon or mackerel, and is also available in fish oil or algae oil (vegan option) supplements.

The Peak-Flavor, Nutrient-Packed Olive Oil
Did you know that most supermarket oils sit on the shelves for months growing stale, musty, and even rancid– a far cry from the highly nutritional fresh-pressed version?
Olive oil is a staple in the longevity-boosting Mediterranean diet and linked to benefits like lower inflammation and better heart and brain health, in large part because of the antioxidants and nutrients it contains. But, like other oils, its nutritional value is highest right after being pressed– and degrades significantly after sitting on the shelf for months (or years). That’s why T.J. Robinson, the “Olive Oil Hunter,” created the Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club that ships farm-fresh, nutrient-rich artisanal olive oil straight to your door. Each oil is independently lab-certified to be 100% extra virgin and arrives direct from the farm with all its flavor and nutrition intact.

7 Things Your Hair Reveals About Your Health
Did you know that hair changes or issues could be a key sign of a health problem? For example, going gray is partly due to genetics but can also be induced by chronic stress. Hair loss or thinning may indicate a thyroid disorder, while hair “shedding” could be a warning sign of anemia or the result of hormonal changes. Brittle hair often stems from using too much heat or too many hair treatments but is also a symptom of Cushing’s syndrome. (More)
Planting Trees Can Help Combat Heatwaves
Many countries around the world experienced record-setting heatwaves this year, which can have a significant negative impact on health. But one solution to rising temperatures could be relatively simple: Plant more trees. A recent study from the UK found that woodlands (and bodies of water) were an average of 3°C (5.4°F) cooler than built up areas, leading the researchers to call for more ‘green’ and ‘blue’ areas in towns and cities. Where Do You Fall on the Internet Addiction Spectrum?
There’s no doubt that we now live in a digital age with people of all ages spending an average of 4.6-6 hours per day online. To try and determine when internet use might become problematic, a new study has come up with an “Internet addiction spectrum” that has 5 categories ranging from ‘casual users’ to ‘addicts’. Perhaps not surprisingly, younger people were most likely to show signs of internet addiction. More alarming is the fact that over 22% of participants were found to be in the ‘addict’ group and only about 15% in the ‘casual user’ group. (More)
Mediterranean Diet, Coffee Can Help Manage Liver Disease
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease, and there is no standard treatment for it yet. Nutrition plays a role in preventing NAFLD, but there is a lack of specific dietary recommendations after diagnosis. According to a recent research review, following a Mediterranean-style diet may be beneficial for halting the progression of NAFLD. Coffee, interestingly, also showed protective benefits against NAFLD and liver fibrosis. (More)
5 Worst Foods (& 3 Worst Drinks) for Your Metabolism
A healthy metabolism is needed not only for weight maintenance but also for many essential bodily functions that help lower your risk of disease. Refined grains and high-sugar snacks are two examples of foods that can trigger inflammation that harms metabolism when eaten in excess. Soda and bottled fruit juice can also derail metabolism with their sugar content, while processed and red meats can have a slowing effect on metabolism. (More)

An essential nutrient is a nutrient your body needs but can’t make on its own. A shortfall of any one of these nutrients can cause serious health problems, and recent data suggests that Americans are most likely to be lacking in calcium, potassium, dietary fiber, and vitamin D.
